From VG:

"Meaning is not in things but in between them." - Norman Brown

I know that Norman Brown is a jazz guitarist but does anyone know the context for this quote? Is it from a song, speech, interview? I used it in a paper and don't want to be caught unaware of its origin. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Much thanks.

All settled at school. My room is actually the smallest on campus (again). This doesn't bother me as I packed strategically. I got all of the classes that I wanted and then some. I'm trying for 20 credits (16 being a full course load). I was feeling incredibly ambitious until I went to the bookstore. Over $300 and I'm not finished yet! I'll be doing a lot of reading this semester.

I'm off to Vermont on Saturday. School starts Tuesday. I'm very, very excited.

I went to DMV and got an ID today. I figured it's a good thing to have since I don't have a license. Our local DMV was remarkably civilized contrary to its reputation.

Friday the family is taking me out to dinner since they won't be with me on my birthday.

I did lots of cleaning today and found a new pair of pants that I bought months ago but haven't worn yet. That's as good as finding a twenty dollar bill in an old jacket.

Question: What's the most amount of money you've ever found lying somewhere?

I think I found two dollars at the beach when I was a kid.

It's snowing. I do love snow. I just went for a walk in it and it was lovely. I'm a bit irritated that my boots haven't arrived though. They were supposed to arrive last friday. I called today and found out that they were only shipped yesterday, which is very disappointing since I received an email exactly a week ago stating that they had already been shipped. *shakes fist at crappy customer service* I'm going back to Vermont on Saturday and I hope I have the boots by then.

I just realized that ewan_daily has an ezboard forum. Cool beans.

My schedule for the spring semester looks nice. The only thing that frightens me is Practical Applications of Statistics. I haven't had math in four years and the prospect of doing anything with my graphing calculator send chills down my spine. Oh, well. To arms!

I've got oatmeal cookies in the oven and they smell wonderful. This is the first time I've baked them using the no sugar sweetener (there are several diabetics in my family) and I'm hoping they turn out well.

I just got back from the mall where I had to do my least favorite kind of shopping: shoe shopping. I hate it. I wear my shoes till they are falling off my feet and I absolutely need to get a new pair. I did pretty good today. I got three pairs, all suitable for walking distances, which is a must because I do a lot of walking around.

I'm trying to compile all of my Ewan scans and make a website. I've done some (but not a lot) of html work before and I have software that makes it easier to create galleries. It's a pleasant excuse to spend time staring at pretty photos of the man.

While at the mall, my mother and I went into Hallmark to get a Valentine card for her mother. There are a lot of really terrible Valentine cards out there. There's nothing at all wrong with a card that says, "I hope you get lucky tonight!" but there are a lot of cards that use flowery, overwritten Hallmark-speak (words such as hope, happiness, wish, and love must be included) to basically say, "I hope you get lucky tonight!" One even said something about finding "happiness and good times on Valentine's Day". It immediately made me think of Big Spender (Fun . . . Laughs . . . Good Times!). Whatever. I prefer the bluntness.

I've just found out that my best friend from high school is getting married in the spring. I'll be 21 in about three weeks, but this news make me feel irrationally old. My best friend is about a year younger than I am. Is 20 young to be getting married? I think I find this shocking because I feel so far from being ready to get married in my own life. Actually, I think it makes me feel more slow than old. As if I need to pick up the pace because I'm obviously substantially behind where I'm supposed to be. This is even more absurd because I'm actually happily reconciled to the notion of never getting married. This has to be some kind of annoying, paraniod, hormonal female thing. That obnoxious metaphor about a ticking clock. It really pisses me off. I'm feeling violent towards the metaphor clock. Eurgh. There will be no sleeping tonight.

    <lj:music>TV. Eye - VG Soundtrack</lj:music>

Can't wait to see this movie. I made a little gallery of screencaps from the trailer. My favorite part of the trailer is the walking thru popcorn bit and the mermaid in the beginning. As posted in Ewan_Daily, I have a scan from the '97 magazine article that the Big Fish producer mentioned as giving him the idea to pair up McGregor and Finney. As much as I love all of Ewan's more adult films, I'm always happy when there's one I can show my parents.

Big Fish Review excerpts behind the cut . . .

Review bits: only six Big Fish reviews up at Rottentomatoes.com so far, but they are all positive (glowing, actually) reviews. Here are some tidbits:

"Ewan McGregor – who looks astonishingly like a young Finney in “Tom Jones” – is fantastic as the younger Bloom, whilst Albert Finney is as solid as always as the lively older version."

and

"The film, adapted by John August from the 1998 novel by Daniel Wallace, blends the off the wall with the wondrously touching so well, that it’s possible Burton was born to helm it. After this, everyone will be somewhat of a fan of the man."

from filmthreat

"Critics have already been comparing Tim Burton’s new film Big Fish to Forrest Gump , which is somewhat of a mis-association. American history happens to a passive Tom Hanks in Robert Zemeckis’s endearing but naïve Oscar-winner. In Big Fish , Edward Bloom (Ewan McGregor) happens to the American pastoral."

and

"Big Fish is sentimental but never manipulative, a non-secular tall tale that speaks to our universal desire to live life not necessarily to its fullest, but with wonderment of our very existence. It’s a simple but profound truth. Big Fish is love and death, Burton style."

from SLANT magazine

And according to Oscarwatch.com:

"BIG FISH is in the race. No question marks. I have been told not to count out Ewan McGregor as Lead Actor. Finney is probably in, and Burton should find himself on the list. Picture, Adapted Screenplay, and maybe one more acting nomination, as well as tech noms abound, are all highly likely."

These might be my favorite pics of Ewan. I love the Moulin Rouge hair because it makes him look deceptively innocent. And look!: His t-shirt is ripped!

*GUH*

*GUH*

*GUH*

Young Adam review highlights:

You might be thinking that you can live without the first film in the Scottish canal movie genre, but in Ewan McGregor "Young Adam" has a British star who's got what it takes - great charisma, movie star good looks and shots aplenty in his acting locker. Forgetting his "Stars Wars" films - not a task which overtaxed me - he's usually made what have proved to be interesting choices, and this movie reinforces that impression (...) McGregor's superb performance calls to mind Steve McQueen, Montgomery Clift or even the young Brando at their best, displaying true screen presence, intelligence and skill. - Jonathan Ross, BBC Film

Then there's McGregor, surely a revelation in this role. As he has risen up the world rankings with the Star War movies and mega-budget productions such as Moulin Rouge and Black Hawk Down, it's easy to forget that he has a hunger for more challenging roles. Young Adam fits into McGregor's CV alongside the likes of Nora, Velvet Goldmine and his Peter Greenaway collaboration, The Pillow Book. But, as a performance, it outstrips them all. McGregor is a fantastically gifted actor in close-up. Just look again at the sheer, shining joy on his face when the camera moves in on the musical numbers in Moulin Rouge. In Young Adam, the lens captures every flicker on his face in tight detail, as his character goes through a lifetime of emotions within the confines of a single film. - Alan Morrison, Daily Record, September 26 2003

At its core, however, this is McGregor's film. Appearing in every scene, dominating every frame of this production, he shows he's about far more than being charming, flashing his lightsaber and flashing his manhood. Instead we see the edges of McGregor's abilities, in what is perhaps his finest performance since Trainspotting (...) Young Adam won't go down in history as a classic, but it marks the emergence from their filmmaking chrysalis' of two talents. McGregor's maturity as an actor and Mackenzie's ability as a director can no longer be in doubt, and Young Adam will stand as testament to their development. - Manchester online, September 25 2003

</i>

If I’d blown away 5,000 people with a semiautomatic machine gun, that would be fine," Ewan McGregor says. "But I showed my penis. It does amuse me, the horrific violence that comes out of American cinema. But someone’s cock is too much. Maybe Michael Moore should make a documentary out of it."

McGregor’s rant about his trouser trout has nothing to do with his starring role in December’s Big Fish, he’s referring to the erotic psychodrama Young Adam, which played at both Cannes and Toronto and will be released in the U.S. by Sony Pictures Classics sometime in 2004. Because of rating and distribution concerns, certain scenes. Including a shot of McGregor’s manhood, probably won’t make the final cut. "If you want to see my penis, you’ll have to fly to Britain," he says with a barking laugh.

Damn. I really need to get that multi-region DVD player.
